Nicodemus Elders
Nicodemus, Kansas was founded in 1877 by ex-slaves. Although now unincorporated, it remains the oldest and only remaining all black town west of the Mississippi. Pictured below are some of the elders of the Nicodemus community, most of whom are direct descendants of the founders. The elders pictured here range in age from 71-102 years old. This project was done on behalf of the Nicodemus Historical Society and is supported with funding from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.
